Meet Beth Brake: Postural Alignment Specialist, Cancer Survivor, and Your Guide to a Pain-Free Life
Before Beth Brake became a certified Postural Alignment Specialist and Cancer Exercise Specialist, she was a patient — searching for answers to her own pain and navigating breast cancer treatment. Her personal journey is the foundation of everything she does.
Meet Beth Brake: Postural Alignment Specialist, Cancer Survivor, and Your Guide to a Pain-Free Life
There's a version of this story where I became a fitness professional because I loved exercise and wanted to help people get in shape. That's not my story.
I became a Postural Alignment Specialist because I was in pain, I was frustrated with the answers I was getting from conventional medicine, and I refused to accept that chronic discomfort was just something I had to live with. And I became a Cancer Exercise Specialist because cancer found me — and movement helped me find my way back.
My clients don't come to me because they want to lose weight or run a 5K. They come to me because they hurt, and they've tried other things, and those things haven't worked. I understand that experience from the inside out.
The Pain That Started Everything
Like many of the clients I work with today, I spent years dealing with chronic pain that nobody seemed to be able to fix. I went through the standard progression: doctor visits, imaging, physical therapy, medications. I got temporary relief. The pain came back. I got more temporary relief. The pain came back again.
It was exhausting — not just physically, but emotionally. When you're in pain and the people you trust to help you keep offering the same solutions that aren't working, it's easy to start believing that this is just how your body is. That you're broken in some way that can't be fixed.
I didn't accept that. I kept looking.
Discovering the Egoscue Method
When I first encountered the Egoscue Method, I was skeptical. The idea that my pain wasn't really about the place where it hurt — that it was about my whole body being out of alignment — seemed almost too simple. Surely the problem was more complicated than that.
But I tried it. And it worked.
Not immediately, and not without effort. The Egoscue Method requires commitment — a daily practice of personalized exercises, patience with the process, and trust that the body can heal when you give it what it needs. But over weeks and months, I felt my body change in ways that years of conventional treatment hadn't produced.
I became so convinced of the method's power that I pursued certification as a Postural Alignment Specialist through the Egoscue Institute. I wanted to be able to offer other people what had been offered to me: a real explanation for why they hurt, and a real path to lasting relief.
Breast Cancer and the Lessons of Survivorship
While I was building my practice, I received a breast cancer diagnosis. It's the kind of news that reorganizes everything — your priorities, your sense of time, your relationship with your body.
Treatment was hard. Surgery, chemotherapy, and the long tail of recovery that follows — fatigue, physical changes, the strange work of learning to inhabit your body again after it's been through something that significant. I leaned hard on everything I knew about movement, alignment, and the body's capacity to heal.
And I added to what I knew. I pursued certification as a Cancer Exercise Specialist, because I recognized that the intersection of cancer survivorship and movement was an area where I had both professional expertise and lived experience to offer. There are things you understand about navigating treatment and recovery when you've been through it yourself that no textbook can fully teach.
Today, working with cancer survivors is one of the most meaningful parts of my practice. I know what it feels like to be in treatment and wonder if you'll ever feel like yourself again. I know what it feels like to come out the other side and rebuild. I'm here to help people through both.
My Approach: Whole Body, Root Cause, Lasting Change
Everything I do is grounded in a few core beliefs:
Your body is designed to be pain-free. Chronic pain is not inevitable, and it is not simply a consequence of aging. In most cases, it has a structural cause — and structural causes can be addressed.
The site of pain is rarely the source of pain. If your knee hurts, the problem may be in your hip. If your shoulder hurts, the problem may be in your thoracic spine. I look at the whole body to find the real answer.
Lasting change requires addressing the root cause. Symptom management has its place, but it's not a solution. I'm interested in why your body hurts — and in correcting that, not just managing it.
Every body is different. There is no one-size-fits-all program. Your postural assessment and your e-cise menu are built specifically for you, based on what your body actually needs.

Working With Me
I'm based in Birmingham, Alabama, and I work with clients both in person and remotely. Remote sessions are fully effective — all you need is a space to move and a willingness to commit to your daily program.
My clients include people dealing with chronic back, hip, knee, and shoulder pain; post-surgical patients looking to restore function; cancer survivors navigating treatment and recovery; and anyone who has been told their pain is something they just have to live with and refuses to accept that answer.
If that sounds like you, I'd love to talk.
